Whitwell Village
Since spring 2016 DSA have been working on the regeneration of this former colliery site as an extension to the village of Whitwell in Derbyshire.
Working closely with the Welbeck Estates team, Planning and Design Group and Baker Consultants together with officers at both Derbyshire County Council and Bolsover District Council, we brought forward a ‘vision’ to secure planning consent for this 47 hectare site, 26 of which is green space.
A major challenge to be tackled included the treatment of the immense former pit tip and its integration into the Magnesian Limestone landscape of this part of Derbyshire.
The work included a detailed public consultation exercise, with the production of a large 1:1,1250 scale physical site model; something that is done rarely these days but that helped local people understand the development, which has got overwhelming local support.
Consent was granted in summer 2019 and since then we have been working on the detailed design of the parkland in particular, as well as the landscape and ecological management plan or LEMP, which will run for over twenty years.
