MV16 Post-16 Centre
MV16 is a school for Post-16 students. The site lies on an elevated plateau off the A6, south of Melton.
DSA were involved at the outset with Leicestershire County Council and the Willmott Dixon design team, including A+G Architects and Arup. We introduced the idea that the whole school landscape should be usable for teaching and learning. The building location was adjusted to enable an almost totally ‘above ground’ SuDS/WSUD solution. We drew up the Landscape Management Plan (LMP) to address planning conditions, BREEAM and to give students input into the way their external learning spaces are managed.
A swale system carries water from hard surfaces water from hard surfaces via ‘nested wetlands’ to a main detention basin. The swales include filter strips that provide pre-treatment, thus creating two treatment-train components. Runoff from roof areas is directed to a rainwater harvesting tank prior to discharge into the main basin.
MV16 forms one of only 22 Europe-wide case studies to star in the EU’s Climate Change Adaptation Inspiration Book, published in 2013. The school’s pioneering approach to teaching attracts visitors from around the world.
