Overview
DSA were invited to develop, in partnership with the University of Sheffield and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, a vision and masterplan for Toyota’s 237ha Sustainable Manufacturing Plant at Burnaston. It is envisaged that this pioneering work will lead to a series of changes to manufacturing plants across the world. The first of some 17 phases of work was
started in 2012.
In 2016 Toyota MMUK decided to start Phases 3 and 4 of the ‘Sustainable Plant Masterplan’, known as the ‘Green Grid’. These phases involved completing the southern access road (Phase 1), continuing the ‘mini-wood’ and ‘1000-year hedges’ along this main frontage.
Phase 4 is the more ambitious phase, wrapping the four main buildings into the ‘Green Grid’ philosophy. This is split into 7 parcels, working around the site from the Nursery in the southeast to the delivery car park in the northwest.

Toyota’s annual ‘Landscape and Biodiversity Management Meeting’ revealed great improvements in the biodiversity of the site since the implementation of Phases 1 and 2, which Phases 3 and 4 aim to capitalise on. The improvements include an increase in moth numbers by almost 400% and doubling the variety of species present, including finding the Garden Tiger Moth, a UK Biodiversity Action Plan Species! We also have Serotine bats present on site, one of the largest species in the UK and unusual to be found this far north!
