Overview
The site for the new community hospital lies in the Malvern Link Conservation Area and so demanded considerable attention on the quality of design, as well as the retention of distinctive local features, such as natural stone walls and mature trees.
The hospital is unusual in that the landscape includes a horticultural area, where local school children take time-out from the classroom to get ‘hands-on’, growing food and learning about healthy eating. A ‘physio-trail’, designed in conjunction with the hospital staff and featuring ramps, steps and seating of various kinds, allows treatment exercises and rehabilitation in the hospital grounds.
The project won the Green Apple Award for The Built Environment and Architectural Heritage and was officially opened by the Princess Royal in 2011.
DSA are retained to advise on the landscape management.

Working closely with the clinical staff has resulted in an award-winning project. Local people, including the hospital’s Friends Group, were engaged in the process, with visits to nurseries to select ornamental and focal trees.
